Do I need to know how to swim before starting water polo?

Water polo is a fun and active sport that builds strong swimming skills over time. Athletes should be comfortable in the water and able to swim, but they don’t need to be perfect swimmers to get started. If you’re unsure whether your athlete is ready, we invite you to join a Trial—we’ll provide a free swim assessment and help guide you to the best next step.

What equipment do I need to play water polo?

Water polo is a sport that doesn't demand much in terms of equipment. To get started, all you need is a swimsuit, goggles, and a towel. As you advance to tournament-level play, it's essential to invest in a proper water polo swimsuit or speedo for optimal performance.

How long is a game?

Game times differ depending on the age group participating. Each game consists of four quarters, with brief breaks in between. For instance, a game for 10U players will have each quarter lasting 4 minutes and a college level game is 8 minute quarters. This structure ensures that all players have a fair and enjoyable experience.

How many athletes are playing at one time in a game?

The number of players varies by age group to ensure fair play and competition. For those aged 10 and under, we have 5 players, while the 12 and under group features 6 players. All other age groups will have 7 players. Each team will have one player designated the goalkeeper, with the remaining players positioned in the field.

What ages and experience levels do you accept?

For our Youth Program, we welcome athletes ages 8–18 at all experience levels, from beginners to advanced players. Our Master’s Program is also open to all experience levels—whether you are brand new to water polo or returning to the sport, you are welcome here.

What is expected of athletes?

Consistent attendance, effort, and a positive attitude are key. Athletes are expected to attend practices and games unless arrangements are made in advance.

What does it take to play at a higher level (high school or college)?

Athletes develop at their own speed, through consistent training, strong swimming ability, coachability, and a long-term commitment to improvement. We support athletes at every stage, from beginners to those pursuing competitive goals.

What costs should I expect?

Monthly dues cover practices. Additional costs may include tournaments, league fees, travel, gear, and USA Water Polo membership.

How are teams and playing time determined?

Teams are formed based on age and experience. Playing time may vary depending on attendance, effort, and game readiness.

How do we stay informed?

Communication is sent through email and team messaging platforms with updates on practices, games, and events. We also post regularly on our events page with current information on tournaments and upcoming events.
